Main Motion
[RONR Chapter 5]
  • There are two types of main motions:
    • Original Main Motion - brings new business before the assembly, usually submitted in writing
    • Incidental Main Motion - relates to the business of the assembly or its past or future action, usually made verbally
  • Only ONE main motion may be considered at a time.
  • A member MUST obtain the floor to make a main motion.
  • Main motions must be seconded, unless it comes from a committee or board.
  • A main motion is the LOWEST ranking motion.
  • A main motion is always debatable.
  • A main motion is always amendable.
  • Requires majority vote unless
    • bylaws state otherwise
    • fundamental rights of members are effected by motion
    • motion changes something previously adopted
  • A main motion cannot be applied to any other motion.
