Main Motion
[RONR Chapter 5]
- There are two types of main motions:
- Original Main Motion - brings new business before the assembly, usually submitted in writing
- Incidental Main Motion - relates to the business of the assembly or its past or future action, usually made verbally
- Only ONE main motion may be considered at a time.
- A member MUST obtain the floor to make a main motion.
- Main motions must be seconded, unless it comes from a committee or board.
- A main motion is the LOWEST ranking motion.
- A main motion is always debatable.
- A main motion is always amendable.
- Requires majority vote unless
- bylaws state otherwise
- fundamental rights of members are effected by motion
- motion changes something previously adopted
- A main motion cannot be applied to any other motion.
